TESLA VIN QUESTIONS

What can a Tesla VIN actually tell you?

A Tesla VIN is useful for vehicle identity, but it is not a complete build sheet. TeslaEdit separates fields Tesla officially encodes from production-era context and things that still need to be verified in the car.

Can a Tesla VIN identify the model and factory?

Yes. Tesla's Service Manuals document VIN positions for the vehicle line, model year and manufacturing plant. The exact code table depends on model and production generation.

Can a Tesla VIN show the drive unit or configuration?

In supported Tesla VIN schemas, specific positions can encode motor or drive-unit categories. TeslaEdit decodes only combinations supported by the relevant Tesla schema and keeps uncertain production context labelled separately.

Can a VIN prove battery health, installed hardware or paid software?

No. A VIN does not prove current battery condition, the exact hardware physically installed today, software packages such as FSD/EAP, or every retrofit performed after production. Those require vehicle-side evidence.

Why does TeslaEdit ask for model year and factory context?

Tesla's VIN tables change across models and production generations. For example, Tesla publishes different VIN decoding tables for legacy Model 3, 2024+ Model 3 and Model Y, so one universal character map would overstate certainty.
